What Do You Do With a Word From God You Don't Understand

God rarely explains the whole thing before He asks you to obey

Abraham was told to leave his country and go to a land God would show him. He was given the instruction before he was given the destination. Hebrews 11:8 says he obeyed and went out, even though he did not know where he was going.

Mary received a word she could not explain to anyone. She would become the mother of Jesus while still a virgin. She asked how it would happen, but she did not demand every detail before surrendering. Her response was, “Let it be to me according to your word.”

Like them, you have heard something from God, but you cannot explain the full picture. You do not know how it will happen, when it will happen, or what obedience will require from you. That lack of clarity is uncomfortable and has caused you question to whether you heard Him at all.

But understanding the instruction has never been a prerequisite for obedience.

God is not withholding information to frustrate you. He is asking you to trust Him more than you trust your own ability to understand everything first. The word may be clear even when the outcome is not.

You have been treating confusion as a reason to wait

You keep asking for another confirmation, another sign, another explanation, and another conversation. You call it discernment, but sometimes it is fear.

Sometimes the issue is not that you cannot hear God. The issue is that you do not want to act until obedience feels safe.

If you already understood everything, obedience would cost you nothing.

There would be nothing to trust Him for because you would already know the plan, the timing, the response from other people, and the final result. Faith would become a transaction. You would act only after God gave you enough information to protect yourself from risk.

That is not how God usually leads.

The word you did not understand may be the word you did not want to hear. It may challenge your plans, expose your fear, or require you to release control. Confusion can become a cover when you are more committed to preserving your comfort than obeying what God already made clear.

Ask yourself what you actually do understand

Instead of focusing on the part you do not understand, focus on what you understand. Do you understand that God told you to apologize? Then apologize. Do you understand that you need to leave the agreement, habit, or relationship that keeps pulling you away from Him? Then obey. Do you understand that you need to begin the assignment, have the conversation, make the decision, or take the first step? Then stop waiting for the whole road to appear. Just do it.

The next step is almost always clear even when the road is not.

Obedience is not a leap into the dark. It is one step taken with the light you already have. Abraham did not know where he was going, but he knew he had been told to go. Mary did not know how the promise would unfold, but she knew who had spoken.

That is enough.

The enemy is the only one who benefits when you remain trapped in that cycle of confusion. He does not need you to reject God openly if he can keep you from obeying God's instruction.

You do not need more information than what God has chosen to give you for this moment. You need the courage to obey what you already know.

You know enough to start

It's time to take that bold step and obey the instructions you have now. God will only give you further instructions, if you have obeyed his last instruction.

If that bold step for you is writing the book God instructed you to write, stop waiting until you understand the entire message, audience, process, and result. Just start writing.

The Write That Book Concept Blueprint will help you get clear on what your book is, who it is for, and what it does. Use it as a starting point, and not another place to hide from obedience.

Understanding come as you walk, but obedience must come first.
